As opposed to the FAFSA, the CSS Profile will look at the parent’s non-custodial assets. If this applies to your household, make sure you keep these 4 steps in mind when applying to schools that require the CSS Profile.

Following these 4 steps will maximize your odds of receiving a large amount of financial aid from these schools.

1) Non-Custodial Parents (CSS Profile)

As opposed to the FAFSA, the CSS Profile will look at the parent’s non-custodial assets, a good strategy here is to look for schools that don’t require the noncustodial parent to disclose this information.

2) Can you exclude a non-custodial parent from completing financial information?

Yes! Some schools offer non-custodial waivers or a supplemental form.

In most cases, both the parents and the student will need to fill out a form to express that the non-custodial parent has no relation with the student.

3) how to determine if your school will offer a non-custodial waiver?

There are three ways to determine if your school will offer a non-custodial waiver.

  1. Email/call the Office of Financial Aid at your school.

  2. On your browser’s search bar, type in the name of your school (example: “Bard“) and then type “Non-custodial parent waiver“.

  3. Most schools that offer the CSS Profile will offer a non-custodial parent waiver.

4) Supplemental third-party testimony for verification

The student will also need a third-party testimony from either a school counselor, psychologist, clergy–someone who is impartial. However, after completing these steps, it will be up to the discretion of each college/university to grant that waiver.
